How to Decarb THCa at Home
The exact temp + time that activates THCa without burning off terpenes.
When you smoke or vape, the lighter does the chemistry for you. But for cooking, baking, or making tinctures, you need to decarboxylate the flower first — convert THCa into active THC.
The Science (Quick)
THCa molecules have a carboxylic acid group attached. Heat removes that group, leaving active THC. The reaction:
The trick is converting THCa without burning off the terpenes that give you flavor + entourage effect.
The Recipe
Equipment: Oven, baking sheet, parchment paper, oven thermometer (your oven dial lies)
Method:
- Preheat oven to 240°F (115°C) — verify with thermometer
- Break flower into pea-sized pieces (don't grind — surface area degrades terps)
- Spread on parchment-lined baking sheet in a single layer
- Bake for 40 minutes
- Cool completely before using
Common Mistakes
- Grinding first — increases surface area, accelerates terp loss. Break by hand instead.
- Higher temp "to save time" — burns terps. The 40-min cook is non-negotiable.
- Trusting oven dial — most ovens are off by 15–25°F. Use a thermometer.
- Skipping the cool-down — reaction continues briefly post-oven. Let it rest.
After Decarb
Decarbed flower is ready for:
- Cannabutter / cannaoil (40 min low simmer in fat)
- Tinctures (30 days in alcohol, room temp)
- Capsules (with coconut oil base)
Dosing
1g of 20% THCa flower yields ~190mg active THC after decarb (95% conversion × 0.877 weight conversion factor). Divide by your edible servings.
