Hemp Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules
Pass left. Don't bogart. The code that separates regulars from rookies.
There's a culture around cannabis that hemp inherited. Most of it isn't written down anywhere. Here are the rules that separate regulars from rookies — the kind of stuff that makes you welcome at sessions.
Rule 1: Pass Left
The pass goes counterclockwise. Always. The reason is older than anyone alive — some say it's a Rasta tradition, some say it's just how the rotation evolved. Doesn't matter why. Pass left.
Rule 2: Don't Bogart
Take 2–3 hits then pass. The joint or vape is a shared object. Holding it while you finish your story is bogarting — the cardinal sin.
Rule 3: Match the Strain to the Setting
Bringing Skywalker OG to a brunch session is a vibe killer. Bringing Frozen Lemons to a couch movie night is wasted potential.
Daytime / social: Sativa or balanced hybrid
Evening / chill: Indica or heavy hybrid
Solo session: Whatever you want
Rule 4: Don't Burn the Whole Joint
If you're the one lighting, take a small starter hit then pass. Don't try to torch the joint to your liking before anyone else has tried it.
Rule 5: Bring Something
If someone's hosting, bring flower, drinks, food, or a lighter. The math: never show up empty-handed to a session.
Rule 6: Don't Crash a Session With Mid
If you're contributing flower to a premium session, contribute at the same tier. Don't show up to an Exotic spread with the convenience-store stuff.
Rule 7: Respect Your Tolerance
Don't pressure people to keep up. If someone passes after one hit, that's their call. Respect it. Pressuring tolerance is rookie energy.
Rule 8: Cornering the Joint
When you light a joint, don't torch it from one side — rotate it slowly so the cherry burns evenly. A side-burning joint is annoying for the next person and wastes flower.
Rule 9: Don't Wet the Roach
Take dry hits. Don't soak the paper. Nobody wants to inherit a soggy roach.
Rule 10: Pay It Forward
If someone smoked you out last week, smoke them out this week. The economy of the session runs on reciprocity.
