Buyer's Guide
The Beginner's Hemp Vape Guide
First vape? Read this before you swipe. Most beginners get sold the cheapest cart on the shelf.
Hemp vapes are the easiest format to start with — quick, discreet, no rolling required. They're also the format with the widest quality range. The same $25 you'd spend on a great pre-roll could land you a great vape or a vape full of cheap distillate and synthetic terpenes.
The 4 Vape Types You'll See
1. Disposable Vape Pen
All-in-one. Battery built in. When the cart's empty, the whole device is done. Best for: travel, occasional use, gifting.
2. 510-Thread Cartridge
Standard cartridge that screws onto a separate battery. Battery is reusable, only cartridge is replaced. Best for: regular users, better long-term value.
3. Pod System
Brand-locked battery + magnetic pods. Smooth UX, but you're locked into one ecosystem.
4. Live Rosin Disposable
Premium tier. Solventless extract instead of distillate. Costs more, hits noticeably better.
5 Red Flags on a Vape Label
- No COA available. Every legit brand publishes lab results. No COA = no buy.
- "Natural flavor" with no terpene profile. Real terps appear on the COA, not in vague marketing language.
- $10 or less. Real ingredients cost money. Cheap carts almost always cut corners on hardware or oil quality.
- Vague hardware specs. Quality brands list ceramic coil, glass tank, ceramic mouthpiece. Plastic-only carts are usually low-tier.
- The oil is glass-clear. Pure clear distillate is highly processed and stripped of original character. Quality oil has color — amber, gold, sometimes slightly cloudy with fresh terps.
5 Green Flags
- Strain name listed ("Blue Dream" not "Berry Flavor")
- Live rosin or live resin in the ingredients
- Glass tank + ceramic coil hardware
- Lab COA dated within 90 days
- Terpene total at or above 5%
Beginner Settings
If your vape has variable voltage (most disposables don't), start at the lowest setting. Higher voltage = bigger clouds, but it also burns through terps faster and tastes worse. Low voltage preserves flavor and stretches the cart.
